I have only been freelancing for the past few years, but I am starting to see the pattern during certain months of the year. Working mostly with merchandise projects for the music industry, it seems to slow down a lot directly after Thanksgiving, and moving into mid January. Already this is seeming to be true again, so this will be the time for me to unwind and lose this burnt out feeling, as the months before have been incredibly busy, both with work and my personal life. I'll still be taking work regularly as it comes in, but if the pattern holds up true, there won't be too much. Therefore, I'm going to be shifting my focus onto recharging as well as other projects that aren't client based.
One of the aspects of a design business that I haven't really pulled the trigger on yet is setting up passive income and doing other streams of income outside of client work. Some ideas that I have been tossing around are an online resource store for other designers, a brand based on my Nightwatch art series, and a typography book for my Inverted Typography series (which I'll be making another post about probably later this week).
This time of the year will be optimal for sitting down and really planning these out, so that I can begin thinking about releases over 2018. All of these ideas are subject to change though, but I know I want to do some form of them in one way or another. I have already written down a list of items for a resource store, things such as old book cover textures, glitch textures, acid wash / speciality garment mockups, various hand poses, etc. Additionally, I snagged a couple new skulls from Halloween sales that I want to turn into photo sets.
I'll keep this blog and design groups updated with anything new regarding these ideas as time goes on. Looking at my schedule, I fully believe I can make at least one resource this week and have available as well.
