Back in August, I was contacted to work on some merchandise graphics for Kelly Clarkson. The brief included wanting to create imagery that was open ended and creative. Using her title "Love So Soft", a heart was an obvious direction that I could pursue. With a bit of sketching, I soon realized that the V in LOVE could act as the middle point of a heart graphic, and the general idea for my below design begun. I wasn't too concerned if some letters were exaggerated a bit, as long as the type worked inside and forming the heart as well as reading correctly.
My process began with pencil sketching the letterforms over a stock heart I grabbed from online. Free handing a heart probably wouldn't of ended too well, especially since I wanted a clean graphic in the end. This was just used to get the general layout. Unfortunately, I did not keep the scans / sketches or else I would include those here (I'm going to try to keep future ones though for later projects that I write about). This was built in Illustrator using shapes and the pen tool, with some finishing touches in Photoshop.
Ultimately, the final garment is black ink on a white tshirt, but I dig this white on peach color that I had initially pitched. You can view the product here: http://store.kellyclarkson.com/soft-heart-5.html
